Chevrolet Sail just weeks away from launch
In 2011, we spotted the next-generation Chevrolet UV/A that will be called the Sail, testing in India. The car was later unveiled at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. General Motors India (GMI) has now confirmed its plans of launching the Chevrolet Sail some time around the festival season.Expect the Sail to hit the market with the same 1.2-litre, 80PS petrol engine that does duty in theChevrolet Beat to take advantage of the excise duty cut for sub 1,200cc. This means the Sail will take on the premium hatchback segment and go head to head with the likes of the bestselling Maruti Suzuki Swift, the Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20 and Fiat Grande Punto. The Sail will also come in a diesel spec, powered most likely by the 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine, developed jointly by GM and Fiat. The diesel Sail will be the key volume driver for Chevrolet considering the current popularity of diesel cars in the wake of constantly rising petrol prices.

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500
There are only two ways you can think about a Royal Enfield motorcycle – either you like them or you don’t. In all these years of watching the Bullet thump by, I have never encountered someone who doesn’t have an opinion about them, but if there’s one fact that even the haters will have to agree to, it’s that RE’s bikes exude a certain old-time charm that is simply lost in today’s age of technology. With the Thunderbird 350 being in existence for over ten years an upgrade has been due for a while and that’s just being subtle about the delay! Of course, the big cruiser evolved in the years since, moving from the AVL lean burn motor to a more sophisticated Twin Spark uni

Premier Rio 1.3-litre diesel to launched
Earlier in May 2012, Premier and Fiat signed a three-year deal for supply of Fiat’s 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel engine to the Indian carmaker. This deal has now yielded its result and on August 2, 2012, Premier will launch the 1.3-litre diesel Rio.The 1.3-litre Premier Rio is a big deal for the company as this is the only diesel-powered Rio that will be sold in Tier I cities with BS IV norms. Given the demand for diesel vehicles in the market and the long waiting periods, the Rio has a cracking opportunity with its compact SUV design that also happens to be a favourite in the market. We like the cosmetic tweaks given to the face-lifted Premier Rio launched at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo that make it a rather good looking little vehicle. The 1.3-litre diesel Rio will be a worthy contender to the traditional diesel hatchback and will indeed stand out of the crowd. Also read: 2012 Premier Rio : First Drive As for the engine itself, Fiat’s 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel engine does duty on a host of cars here in India, including the hot-selling Maruti Suzuki Swift, Swift DZire, Ritz, Ertiga, SX4, Tata Indica Vista, Tata Manza,Fiat Punto and the Fiat Linea. So, there is no questioning the engine’s reliability or capability.
New Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 racks up 10,000 bookings
Maruti Suzuki had registered over 10,000 bookings for the new Alto 800 even before its launch. This shows the confidence customers have in the new Alto 800 even before they had seen the vehicle. It also means that customers believed that the car would be priced attractively. And Maruti has not let them down. With prices ranging from Rs 2.44 lakh to Rs 2.99 lakh for the petrol models and Rs 3.19 lakh to Rs 3.56 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) for the CNG models, the new Alto 800 (petrol) prices remain exactly the same as that of the outgoing 800cc Alto. In essence customers are getting a better car at the same price.

Mercedes-Benz ML 250 CDI to be launched on October 10
The SUV market has been growing steadily in India owing to their status symbol aura and imposing road presence. SUVs across price brackets have recorded healthy sales figures.
Mercedes-Benz is looking to capitalise on this with their new ML 250 CDI. Rivals Audi and BMW have introduced their compact SUVs, the Q5 and the X3 respectively to exploit the market potential of the segment. While the Mercedes-Benz ML is a full sized SUV, its 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine will allow the company to price it in competition with the smaller Audi Q5 3.0 TDI and BMW X3 30d that are equipped with bigger six-cylinder engines. This gives Mercedes-Benz quite an edge in the luxury SUV market as most of these cars are chauffeur-driven and luxury supersedes power.Nevertheless, the ML 250 CDI’s engine that does duty in the C-Class and the E-Class develops 206PS of power and 500Nm of torque. This means that the ML 250 CDI still has the grunt to deal with the bulk.
Honda Brio Automatic to launch on October 18
Japanese car maker Honda has announced the introduction of its small car Brio in an automatic transmission avatar expected to be launched on October 18. Powered by the existing 1.2 litre i-VTEC four cylinder motor, the five speed autobox will be available in two trim levels namely ‘S(O)’ and ‘V’. The able workhorse that is electronically linked to the transmission produces 88 PS of power @ 6,000 rpm and 109Nm of torque @ 4,500 rpm. Also Read: Honda Brio Automatic : First Drive
Including the creature comforts of the existing ‘S’ trim version such as power windows, keyless entry and an integrated audio system along with steering mounted controls, the base automatic will also have SRS Airbags, ABS with EBD and tilt steering as additions. The top-of-the-line ‘V’ variant will also sport alloy wheels, fog lamps and dual tone beige interior.
The torque convertor may seem to be slightly dated. However, Honda is upping the ante in the small car segment considering the competition has adopted to no more than a three speed autobox layout. The Brio Automatic also has a multi-gear selection layout that is ideal for trotting through crowded city roads with ease without compromising on mileage.
Honda has achieved an ARAI claimed fuel efficiency of 16.5 kmpl with the five-speed torque convertor as opposed to a 19.4 kmpl with the manual transmission and is expected to have an approximately Rs 25,000 rise over the existing manual transmission version.
